Here is the most common formula to measure goalie pads;
Ankle To Knee Length + Thigh Rise Height + Skate Size = Pad Size
Unfortunately this formula is not always 100% correct, so please use this formula as a reference only
The size of the pad may also be different from the formula due to the style of play for a specific goaltender as well (butterfly, hybrid, and/or stand up)
Another way to check your pad size is to try on a pair of pads that you already know the size of for comparison
The Ankle To Knee measurement should be from the center of the inside of the ankle bone up to the front center of the kneecap whith a slight bend in the leg
The Thigh Rise Height is measured from the center of the kneecap up to the desired height of the pad
EXAMPLE: 18" Ankle To Knee + 7" Thigh Rise Height + 9 Skate Size = 34" Pad Height
Consumers are advised to bring in their skates and goal pants when trying on new leg pads
Bringing in your skates and pants will provide an 'on ice' fitting for a more realistic feel
When sizing a set of leg pads for someone who is growing, it is important to allow for the most growing room possible. However, It's equally important that the pad is not too cumbersome. Bulky pads restrict movement
To properly account for growing room, the player should be able to get his or her knee to touch at least the bottom third of the knee cradle while the knee is slightly bent. If the knee doesn't reach while bent, the pad is too big
Generally your knee cap should fit slightly below the center knee roll of the pad. Once the pads break in, your knee will be directly behind the center knee roll
